la condition masculine (1976)

lady in satin (1958)
this is the best album billie holiday recorded. i'm really drunk so forgive my writing but the immediate effect of her voice, and the added fact that this was the last LP she released, it really packs a punch. the orchestration and ethereal backing vocals are just incredible. it's like nothing else she recorded. get heartbroken

high atmosphere (1965/75)
ballads and banjo tunes from virginia and north carolina, recorded in 1965. my favourite appalachian folk compilation; lloyd chandler and wade ward's tracks in particular.
classic mountain songs from smithsonian folkways (2002?)
pretty varied and comprehensive compilation, earliest recording from 1928, up into i think the 70s. if ya like karen dalton, there are some earlier recordings by other artists of a few songs she performed on here
death chants, breakdowns, and military waltzes (1964)
"Blind Joe never sang. He had no voice. He had been struck blind and dumb at the age of three by a local member of the NAACP, for not complying with the organization's demand to learn bar chords and diminished augmented sevenths, so that he might disassociate himself from the myth of the Negro past..."

music of indonesia vol 20 - indonesian guitars
there's a huge range of styles here, even some really amazing lap-steel, and nice raga-like stuff. don't think there's any solo guitar stuff - all the tracks have vocal accompaniment which might be my favourite part. minor key folk hollerin'

greatest hits (1973)
restrained pretty-as-hell nigerian highlife. maybe mellow is a better descriptor, it still has really tight rhythm/percussion
wing of peace (1972)
one of the best albums from http://ghostcapital.blogspot.com
fresh link - the original died during the recent narcfest i think
korean psych/downer folk w/plenty of organ
(go visit ghostcapital!)
